Dedicated internet access (DIA) is a private connection that provides exclusive bandwidth to a single organization or business.

DIA differs from the more common, shared connections, where multiple businesses in an area share one connection, splitting the available bandwidth between them. The exclusivity provided by DIA ensures consistent connection speeds, low latency and enhanced security for business-critical operations.

With the rapid expansion of cloud-based business services, remote work and the ongoing digital transformation across industries, reliable internet access is now more of a business necessity than a “nice to have.” DIA can be the foundation you need when you can’t afford downtime or degraded performance.

What Does DIA Mean?

Dedicated internet access can be explained as your organization has a private, exclusive connection to the broader internet. You get an uncontended allocation of bandwidth and symmetrical upload and download speeds, rather than the unevenly distributed speeds typical of shared connections.

Dedicated internet access will come with service-level agreements (SLAs) outlining the guarantees in your contract. These may include uptime percentages and performance metrics for latency, packet loss and service response times. The SLAs should also provide for monetary compensation should you not receive the promised bandwidth or uptime.

Is DIA Different from Business Broadband?

DIA differs from business broadband primarily in the uncontended connection you get with DIA. On the other hand, business broadband pulls from a pool of bandwidth shared with other organizations in the area. This results in substantial performance differences, with DIA maintaining consistent metrics throughout even periods of peak usage. This is a crucial distinction for larger enterprises as latency can cause service disruptions for your customers and unstable bandwidth can lead to glitchy conference calls or voice over IP (VOIP) calls being dropped.

What are the Benefits of DIA for Businesses?

While there are many benefits of DIA for enterprises, they mostly center around increased reliability and lower latency compared to shared connections. DIA supports business continuity by ensuring critical line-of-business applications are always available even during network disruptions that can impact shared services. Further DIA benefits include:

  • Guaranteed high-speed performance and uptime backed by SLAs.
  • Enhanced security since DIA traffic does not traverse public networks, limiting your data’s attack surface.
  • Scalability, as the connection is yours exclusively so your provider can scale your bandwidth up for releases or other events, then back down for quiet times quickly and without disruptions.
  • Symmetrical upload and download speeds mean your video conferencing, data transport and customer access to your services will work seamlessly together.

Reasons Businesses Should Have DIA

Knowing the benefits DIA brings to your organization is key. Along with the list above, there are further business-related reasons to consider dedicated internet access for your enterprise. These range from more reliable connections for your remote staff to faster collaboration on shared files and better security for online payments and data processing.

Remote Work

DIA eliminates the latency when multiple remote workers try to access the same company resources simultaneously. Guaranteed bandwidth ensures that video calls remain clear, VOIP calls remain connected and access to business tools stays consistent, allowing your remote and hybrid workforce to be just as effective and productive as when on-site.

Faster Collaboration

The consistent performance of a DIA means that collaboration platforms like video conferencing apps, shared document editing and project management tools function without delays or interruptions. With the heavy reliance on cloud-based apps and real-time collaboration tools businesses have, a connection you can trust to handle your needs can eliminate unnecessary stress.

Enhanced Cloud Connectivity

Whether you’re using software as a service (SaaS) platforms, cloud storage options, or hosted applications, symmetrical upload and download speeds are crucial for businesses migrating to cloud-based or hybrid cloud infrastructure. DIA ensures data flows smoothly and seamlessly between on-prem and cloud solutions for disruption-free operations.

Secure Online Payments and Processing

When combined with solid encryption and security protocols, DIA helps ensure that sensitive financial data is transmitted securely and that payment systems maintain the uptime required for business continuity. The dedicated nature of a DIA reduces the risk of interruption in payment transactions that could result in lowered revenue or customer dissatisfaction.

How to Choose a DIA Provider

As with any business-critical service, assessing your choices and selecting the right DIA provider can make or break your experience. There are many factors to consider, from whether the bandwidth is indeed uncontested to the provider’s ability to support your operations 24/7 on a global scale. Additional factors to focus on include:

  • Infrastructure and coverage area: Can the provider deliver the same level of service to all of your global locations?
  • Technical support capabilities: Can they monitor and provide timely service responses to disruptions?
  • Flexibility and scalability: Can they scale your bandwidth to match the pace at which your company is expanding? What about short-term scaling, like for a new release or online event?
  • Security: Do they offer DDoS protection, network monitoring, or other managed security services?
  • Total cost of ownership (TCO): Installation fees, recurring monthly charges, and the general terms of your contract are all important to align your business requirements with your budget.

    FAQs ABOUT DIA

DIA stands for Dedicated Internet Access. DIA is a private internet connection that provides exclusive bandwidth to a single organization or business.
The decision whether dedicated internet is worth it depends on factors such as the size of your organization, your reliance on cloud services and your resilience to downtime. For companies with more than 10 employees, those in data-intensive industries, or where downtime significantly impacts your bottom line, DIA is worth investigating.
Dedicated internet access pricing will vary significantly based on bandwidth usage, location and provider. A general window would be $500-$7,500 per month for connections between 100Mbps and 10Gbps. A primary factor in the different rates is whether or not your location is “on-net” (connected to fiber).
Dedicated internet access is where your organization pays for uncontested bandwidth, whereas shared internet has multiple businesses drawing on a single bandwidth pool. The difference is primarily in allocation and consistency. Dedicated internet guarantees your business symmetrical upload and download speeds even across peak usage periods, while shared internet does not come with symmetrical speeds or speed guarantees.
