The New Rules of Hybrid Cloud Part 3: AI Workloads Demand a New Cloud Architecture

October 16, 2026

You asked the right question. Now meet the hardest answer.

You learned to ask what each workload needs before deciding where it runs. AI-enabled workloads answer that question in a way that breaks the centralized model outright.

AI does not fit the architecture you already have. It requires one built around where data and inference actually happen.

AI workloads break the old rules

  • Massive data. AI training and inference generate and consume data at a volume traditional apps never approached. Moving all of it to a central region is slow and expensive.
  • Low latency. Real-time inference, whether on a factory line or in a customer interaction, cannot wait on a round trip to a distant data center.
  • Governance at the edge. Sensitive data used for inference often cannot leave its region. Governance has to hold where the model runs, not where the cloud console lives.

Why centralized cloud fails AI on three fronts

  1. Latency – Centralized cloud sends every request on a long path. For AI inference, that distance turns real-time into too late
  2. Data gravity – As AI data grows, it becomes harder and costlier to move. Egress charges and bandwidth limits punish you for shipping data to central compute, and the data ends up dictating where the work has to happen anyway
  3. Governance gaps – A central console cannot enforce regional policy consistently across every place a model runs. That gap is exactly where a compliance audit finds trouble

Bring compute to the data, not the data to compute

Run workloads where the data lives and the inference happens. Compute moves to the data, not the other way around.

AI does not adapt to centralized compute. You bring compute to the data through distributed cloud and edge, then govern all of it as one system.

Conclusion

The third rule of the new hybrid cloud

The enterprises that win with AI will be the ones who rebuild around where data and inference happen, governed as one system, and treat that as the new baseline rather than a future project.
